Digitimes tried to estimate the cost of the Retina display found in the new MacBook Pro.
While a standard panel with size would cost around 40-45 USD, the Retina panel is probably costing Apple around 150 USD/unit. In addition, Apple most probably had to work on a thinner and more efficient back lighting system. The price difference between the standard and the Retina version for the MacBook Pro is around 400 euro. So, if it does not include the optical drive, it sports a SSD, 2 Thunderbolt ports, etc... so the price difference can be indeed around 200 USD and be linked to the extra cost of the display.
