Thunderbolt to Become a Standard in 2013

By linathael. Original by Lionel - 19/03/2012 06:00:00 CET - Category: Peripheral - Source: Digitimes

While Apple hardware have been offering Thunderbolt port for more than one year, Pc manufacturers have now adopted this new standard port, essentially on ultra- and notebooks most likely under the pressure of Intel. According to Digitimes and following previous news on the topic, it seems that Thunderbolt should become a widespread and default port in 2013, with the availability of optical fiber internal connection to become available by the end of 2012 and would complement current copper-based connectics. We can imagine that Intel will offer both solutions and Apple and PC manufacturers will adopt one solution of the other depending on the hardware model and the targeted market. Optically-connected Thunderbolt might initially remain dedicated to high-end hardware and workstations.
