If the performance of the iPhone 4S camera is recognized by all, this is linked to an excellent CMOS image sensor from Sony. The company announced to have developed a new generation with highly promising performance levels.

The new generation will have pixels directly connected to the electronics layer (no more supporting substrate), making such sensor thinner. Sony could then add an additional white pixel in the RGB profile:

It really improves the rendering especially in low light, a shooting conditions known to be very difficult for Smartphone cameras. Sony will deliver first samples to its partners (8 MPixels and 13 MPixels) in March, while mass production should start in summer; right on time for the next generation iPhone.
