PCI-Express SSD Compatible with Mac Pro

By linathael. Original by Lionel - 18/01/2012 06:00:00 CET - Category: SSD

Historically, only very few PCI-Express cards have been compatible with our Macs, and especially for HD interfaces for Mac Pro. It was true with plate-based HD and with SSDs. First PCI-Express Drive were not compatible with Mac (no drivers developed).
OWC announced a model that will be compatible with the Mac Pro.

This is an interesting design. Indeed, it features storage modules that are plugged on the PCI-Express card, so it becomes possible to have an evolutive storage solution, ranging from 60 GB to 2 TB. All modules work together thanks to a RAID controller located on the top left on the card.

We are now waiting for prices and performance levels for such card, but keep in mind that due to the choice of PCI-Express 2.0 4x, the maximal speed will be 1 GB/s (not too bad nevertheless).
