Last week, Intel unveiled its a new serie of ATOM CPU, aka Medfield, dedicated to Smartphone and Tablets, with a clear goal to compete with ARM CPU.
In a recent interview, Warren East, ARM CEO, gave his view on the recent move from Intel to enter into a market almost exclusively based on ARM CPU. He does not think that intel offer will not be competitive, and he thinks that the giant is aiming to be a strong competitor, however, he think that it will need some times before Intel CPUs can really be a serious danger for ARM CPUs. While first Medfield will offer a strong performance level from the beginning on, their performance/watt ratio will not be as good as the current ARM CPUs.
Intel will have to work to be able to deliver products designed for such markets and its needs, instead of trying to adapt a CPU initially designed for another niche. Nevertheless, Intel expects that new engraving processes, such as the 3D 22 nm technology, will allow the founder to bring low power consuming Medfield on the market. But this process is not used for ATOM CPU yet.
If the battle between Intel and AMD seems to be over, the second surviving thank to its GPU business, a another big battle is expected for the coming years between Intel and ARM. Indeed, the latest after controlling the market for Smartphone and Tablet CPUs, is now thinking of expanding its marketshares by offering notebook dedicated ARM CPUs; wheres this market is today massively controlled by Intel Core CPU.
