The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) defined the 802.22 wireless standard. It will use the frequencies left unused by digital TV (between 54 et 862 MHz) to bring an internet connection to remote places with a low density of population. One antenna installed in a TV tower could cover very large areas, up to 20,000 Km2 (7,722 sqm) and could bring a speed reaching 22 Mbits/s, which is about what DSL cable reaches in average today.
In order to use that wireless service, customers will only need a sort of modem that would work as a router to which other devices could be connected with or without a wire.
Despite these the technical improvements, the same problems that occurred with analog signals will remain, problems mostly due to natural obstacles.
