Facebook was in the spotlight when it launched a facial recognition feature on its website, automatically suggesting tags on the pictures uploaded by users. The major problem was that it was activated by default, and users were not even informed of the change.
Bad news for Facebook, German authorities have decided that the system is illegal according to German law. Facebook will have to deactivate the feature for all users connecting from that country.
It could be only the beginning as it is quite possible that Facebook is violating European Union Law as well. If that was the case, the feature would have to be deactivated in the entire EU, or Facebook could face heavy consequences (financial consequences).
