Last August, it was announced that Apple had signed an exclusive partnership With Liquidmetal Technologies for the use of the Liquidmetal in the field of electronics. That alloy has exceptional proprieties because it is amorphous once it has cooled down, while other metals keep a crystalline structure.
At first we all thought that it would be used to make new, more robust cases for mobile devices. Its final use could be completely different and quite revolutionary. According to Cult Of Mac, the company has filed a patent in which it uses the alloy as a catalyst in a fuel cell.
We don't know the details so we can only guess that the amorphous structure could have an advantage and favor the catalysis or ionic exchanges.
In any case, if Apple really succeeded into making an efficient and economically interesting fuel cell, they will be able to make devices which will recharge with a simple ethanol cartridge and which will have a very long battery life.
