Liquid Submersion Indicator: Apple Changes the Name

By linathael. Original by Lionel - 14/09/2010 06:00:00 CEST - Category: iPhone

We have reported several times on the relatively variable efficiency of those Liquid Submersion Indicators now found in all Apple devices.

These indicators are supposed to reveal if the device has been in contact with water something which would void the warranty. Due to the poor discrimination between contact with water and immersion in water, Apple has decided to change the name of the "sensors" as customers travelling in humid regions might have protected their iPhones or iPod as much as possible, without dropping them in water, but droplets of water are in the air.
So, instead of "Liquid Submersion Indicator", they will now be named "Liquid Contact Indicator". The difference may be semantic, but will allow repair centers to know that an indicator could be red due to a single water droplet in the wrong place. If a single sensor has turned red without any signs of oxidation, you should probably still be entitled to obtain a repair under warranty, if you politely insist.
