Radeon HD 5770 and 5870 should function in the Mac Pro 2006

Even if the first Mac Pros are practically identical to the model which succeeded to them in 2008, they diverge by an invisible detail to the naked eye, the EFI. They are the only Mac Pros to have 32 bits EFI whereas the models which followed have 64 bits. For daily use there is no obvious difference, except for those who want to change the graphics card.
It was thought that it would be impossible to update the 2006 Mac Pro for the Radeon HD 5x70, and maybe this is so. However, according to Netkas, the bios of these cards could be compatible with all the versions of EFI. This is excellent news if one looks at the price of the new 2010 machines which will put off all but the professional; a new video card should give a good crack of the whip to these 4 years old machines but built to last a long time, especially if one gives them another whiplash with a good SSD.
