The use of the massive capability of GPU for raw computing is now recognized and being used by NVIDIA to compete with Intel in some niche market. Some pirates also noticed the increasing power of such GPU-based hardware and might be planning to use it for hacking some secure system via brute force attack. This is a rather simple technique, try all combination of letters, numbers and signs until you get the right one. If it could required months in the past, with GPGPU it could only now take fez minutes to hours.
Some specialist in IT security are today considering that 7 characters password composed of letter ,numbers and signs are not reliable anymore. There recommend to switch to at least 12 characters structure. this is especially true as most users are having only one password for all their accounts among the different websites they can visit, this could potentially compromise their private life, and their bank account too.
