Atheros and Wilocity announced that they are working on a new wireless standard that they call Wireless PCI Express. It is largely based on that defined by WiGig, namely to combine the standards 802.11n at 2,4 and 5 GHz and adding the of the 60 GHz band to it so that very high data flows are possible over short distances. It is augmented by an implementation of the PCI-Express standard. Thus, it will be possible to use this interface that one finds in all the computers and to use cards with this standard external to the machine.
The standard is made in such a way that everything is transparent, the system of the machine does not realize that the card is remote. There is no need for a specific software layer.
In the long term, it would, for example, be possible to have one or even several external graphics cards connected to screens or television sets and allowing remotely (and according to the band-width) a display of quality 3D.
It is difficult still to know what future this specific technology will have, however it seems certain that the wireless equipment using the 60 GHz band will arrive in the next years and gradually supplant Wi-Fi 802.11n that today is the reference.
