Intel: NVIDIA GPGPU Only 14x Faster than CPU...

Usually, each CPU or GPU is trying to demonstrate that its products are the best, and its software and hardware solutions are the best option. For once, a company, Intel, decided to evaluate performance level of solutions from competitors. In a Tech document dedicated to CPU and GPU computing, Intel admitted that for some calculations the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280 was 14 times faster than the Core i7-960, and overall in average 2.5 times faster for tested type of calculation. IT could also be interesting to put this information back into the context of some analysts claiming that the NVIDIA GPU could be 100 time faster.

Of course, it did not take long for NVIDIA to immediately surf on this news and acknowledge Intel for recognizing the superiority of NVIDIQ solutions, while the giant was probably publishing such tech notes to demonstrate that overall the GPU is “only” 2.5 times faster.

Overall, after dropping Larrabee, this information indicates that Intel is facing some problems to deliver more raw crunching power with its CPU, beside its current strategy to multiply the number of core per CPU. At the same time, NVIDIA is recording some success in selling its GPGPU hardware and software solutions to Pro users.
