Value of ARM Holding rose to the top of the FTSE 100 after rumors of on-going talks resurfaced about a potential bid for the electronic chipmaker from Apple. This was most likely fueled by the fact that the new iPhone 4G is also powered by the A4 CPU, a ARM-class CPU. Arm’s shares surged 20%, writing a new page in the recent high volatility of the value on the market over the last few months. Speculators might be driving this for some specific interest, whereas most information indicates that the US antitrust regulators would most likely not accept such acquisition as it would give Apple a dominating monopoly position for CPU dedicated to mobile devices and Smartphones. We might be wrong, but so far, Apple can develop ARM CPU without acquiring ARM Holding.
