According to a rumour launched by VR-Zone, Western Digital have started to market new hard drives of 2 TB. These new models differ from the precedents on the most important point but difficult to check without dismounting them. They are fitted with 3 platters of 667 GB against 4 of 500 of the preceding models. The only concrete evidence in favour of this discrete change is related to the data flows of the new models which passes from 83 to 90 MB/s, something that traditionally increases when the density of the platters increases.

These discs would also, at least in theory, consume less power and especially to create less heat, with fewer moving parts and motors used less.
Of course the last interesting point with platters of 667 GB. It is possible to assemble 4 to have hard drives of more than 2,5 TB. But obviously such a release is not yet planned.
