If SSDs are clearly offering higher performance levels than disc-based HD, it is also clear than they remain too expensive for being true competitors when it comes to save large amount of data. LSI just introduced a new solution aiming to get the best from both storage technologies with new software coming bundled with their MegaRAID card. They use a SSD connected to the RAID card in addition to the standard HDs. The SSD works as a large cache to speed up reading and writing modes, but more importantly IOPS. This is entirely transparent for the end user and does not challenge security and safety as redundancy is preserved.
This could remind you what Steve Wozniak said about SSD and the fact that both system will live together for years.
