As the CeBiT opened its doors in Hanover (Germany), several IT/computer and related business companies have started to announce new products. NVIDIA unveiled some data and details about the forthcoming GeForce GTX 480, its future flagship based on Fermi chips:
- First, it will drain HUGE amount of energy: you will need at least a 600 W PSU... If one uses a 12 V tension, it would imply a 42 Amp intensity... Let's hope that the graphic card will be very power efficient in 2D, to be able to deliver power on-demand.
- To cool down this monster, fans with specific design are required, however, it is unclear if they will remain silent.
- Last but not least, the graphic card should be faster than the Radeon HD 5870, at least in some settings. however, this would not be a real achievement if we consider that the Radeon was released several months ago... This new NVIDIA graphic card will be for sure faster than the Radeon for Open CL with Snow Leopard. Currently, all Radeon have rather minimalist performance levels with Open CL, however ATI is apparently working hard for improving them. Such situation does not help in promoting Open CL 6 months after its introduction with Snow Leopard, the GeForce GTX 480 might change things.
