A little while ago we spoke about the desire of Google in the long term to make on-the-fly translations of the phone conversations with its mobile phones. While waiting for this possiblity, the company made the demonstration of another very impressive type of translation.
The system functioning on Android is able to translate texts. It is enough to take a photograph of a text, a panel or a shop front and the system sends the photograph, then the servers make a character recognition, translate the contents of it before returning it on the telephone.
In the long term, this system will be integrated into the mobiles under Android and it is likely to be pretty successful even if its use will remain limited. We await its release impatiently, not to play with, but to know if Google will start to favour the services on its system or if they will release at same time the equivalent thing for the iPhone.
For the moment, in spite of the release of Android and of Nexus One, Google keeps relatively neutral between the various platforms. They could be tempted the day when they will want to add some weight in favour of their products.
