If DRMS (Digital Rights Management) are not used anymore on online music stores, they are still heavily adopted for online video offers, and will most likely be present also for all eBooks from the iBook.
this is reported by the LA Times. DRMs to be used will be Apple FairPlay, with their knowns limitations. This will of course kill the compatibility of eBooks purchased on the eBook store, aka iBook. As with the music at the beginning, customers might have to purchase twice a title if they decide to move from one tablet model to another...
We can imagine that those DRMs are a tool for Apple to get as much as possible Publishers onboard, however, they might with the time change their mind, or depending if Apple gets a similar monopoly position as with the iPod on the online music stores market, that they will not have anymore the choice than dropping DRMs. Apple and publishers have a common interest of having DRMs as it linked customers to the iPad, and DRMs would most likely disappear if there is no competitors on the market. On the other side, if the market explodes, both offers and customers, authorities, such as the EU, might look again at those DRM and their limitations to customers' rights.
