Instead of preparing to fight against the lawsuit launched by Nokia for patent infringement, Apple decided to strike back, applying the well known adage, attack is the best defense, and to also launch a lawsuit against Nokia, arguing that the renowned mobile phone maker would be violating 13 of Cupertino's patents. There are no further details released, but one can expect that most of those patents are related to the touch screen interface.
This is a usual way in the field to promote settlement, as a legal action might have random results, both companies will finally agree on a compromise and sign a cross-licensing partnership. At the end, only lawyers would have benefit (and promoted?) from this story.
