Seagate has officially unveiled its first range of SSD discs, the Pulsar. These discs are not intended for the general public, but only for the professional market.

For this reason, they will be equipped with SLC memory, less dense but more enduring and powerful that the MLC that is used mostly in the currently sold SSD. They have a 5 years guarantee and a breakdown risk evaluated at 0,44% per annum. They will be equipped with a SATA II Interface and have a 2.5" format 7 mm thick. The performance depends on the capacity.

  • 50 GB: 240 MB/s in reading and 220 MB/s in writing (40 MB/s for the small files) 30000 i/o a second in reading and 25000 in writing (2600 on the small files)
  • 100 GB: 240 MB/s in reading and 220 MB/s in writing (80 MB/s for the small files) 30000 i/o a second in reading and 25000 in writing (5300 on the small files)
  • 200 GB: 240 MB/s in reading and 220 MB/s in writing (160 MB/s for the small files) 30000 i/o a second in reading and 25000 in writing (10500 on the small files)

The difference is thus evident in the writing of small files, a crucial point that is seldom discussed by the manufacturers, however this is very important point when they play the part of storage in servers. No prices have beenl communicated, but considering the price of SLC, the SSD currently on sale will appear cheap.
