Another step towards a new range of portables

Apple is locked to Intel regarding the cpu for its machines, this it is not difficult to know what will happen with the next range, in particular with the laptops. Without much risk of being wrong, we now know the processors that will equip the next evolution of the MacBook Pro:

  • Core i5-520M: 2 cores running at 2,4 GHz with one able to reach the 2,93 GHz with the Turbo boost and an integrated graphic part running at 500 MHz that can be overclocked to 766 MHz.
  • Core i5-430M: 2 cores running at 2,26 GHz with one able to reach the 2,53 GHz with the Turbo boost and an integrated graphic part running at 500 MHz that can be overclocked to 766 MHz.
  • Core i3-350M: 2 cores running at 2,26 GHz without Turbo Boost with an integrated graphic part running at 500 MHz that can be overclocked to 667 MHz.
  • Core i3-330M: 2 cores running at 2,13 GHz without Turbo Boost with an integrated graphic part running at 500 MHz that can be overclocked to 667 MHz.

One could have an extreme configuration ie Core i7 920XM equipped with 4 cores, but without the integrated graphic part.

All that was missing from these processors was a compatible chipset, which is now in place with the announcement of a new revision, B3 of the PM55 Express, a mobile version of the chip that one finds already in the iMac Core i5 and i7.

In this configuration, this chip only plays the role of controller of the peripherals consuming no more than 3,5W at maximum, which compensates for the heavier consumption by the processors. The next range should give us a jump in the performance, but it will be nevertheless be lower than that brought about by the iMac Core i5 and i7 when compared to Core 2 duo, since the platform will remain those of a portable machines and thus limited in order to control power consumption, thermal dissipation and to ensure a battery life as long as possible.
