If for some users, gigabit Ethernet with its potential data transfer speed of 100 MB/s is not enough, especially if you are using large RAID volume or SSD, it becomes quickly a bottleneck. You can of course use optical fiber, but another solution might be available soon. In Japan, one can now find PCI Express card supporting 10 Gbits/s Ethernet on a PCI Express 8x slot.
