Unity free as in "free beer"

One of the most acclaimed 3D game development environment, Unity, is now available for free. Recently used to produce a significant quantity of games on the iPhone, but also on Mac, Windows, it is characterized by a very optimized rendering engine as well as by a Mac-like, user friendly design environment. While the licence of this free version does not ship with all the features of the pro version (see license comparison table here) and does not allow the export of games for iPhone, it should fulfill most of the needs of independant game designers. With the upcoming release of Blender 2.5 and MakeHuman 1.0, it is to be part of a very fancy set of free professional-grade tools available for those of us interested in the design of 3D content, games and interactive environments on Mac and PC alike.
