Mac mini: Comparing the Standard Model and the New Server Model

by linathael . Original by Lionel - 24/10/2009 00:38:00 CEST

The company Macminicolo, specialized in hosting solutions based on Mac mini, released a comparison between the new Mac mini models: the standard version with the Mac OS X Server version featuring 2 HDs.

As one would have expected it, there is no real difference between both models.

Changes are minors. Apple developed a specific card to interconnect both HD ports, and added the second HD in a support fitting the space left free by the missing SuperDrive. Apple charges 200€ more for this modification, but you get a second HD and a licence for Snow Leopard Server. If you are calculating hte price of all indepednet component, this is a excellent deal. However, it is unclear if all customers will really make use of OS X Server. But this is a strategic decision made by Apple and we like the idea of having a Xserve mini.

Last but not least, below is a photo of a Mac mini-based data center at Macminicolo.
