Despite performance levels of SSDs, disk-based HD manufacturers keep releasing new products, especially high -performance SDS drives. The new series from Hitachi offers 15,000 rpm drives:
- UltraStar 15K600: 3.5" with a maximum capacity of 600 GB.
- UltraStar C15K147: 2.5" with a maximum capacity of 147 GB.
Both drives feature 64 MB of cache memory. As you might have noticed it, 2.5" drives are getting more and more market share on the server-dedicated HD market. Their capacity is often enough for most usage and they drain much less power than their 3.5" brothers. The latter point is a parameter getting more and more importance for data centers, when one needs to safe on energy and/or cooling system.
Regarding 2.5" drives, we would be happy to have such format included/supported on future Mac Pro, as one could install SSD units. It could also makes sense in a iMac, offering hardware compatibility for a 3.5" and 2.5" HDs. The chipset or hardware (Intel or NVIDIA GF 9440M) already offer up to 6 SATA ports.
