10 Years Warranty for a SSD

by linathael . Original by Lionel - 10/07/2009 06:00:00 CEST

One of the main criticisms about MLC-based SSDs is the limited lifetime of the memory chips: 10,000 writing cycles. Of course, this should give you years of proper operation, however, considering the premium price tag, one would have expected a bit more time. This could be the reason why Patriot decided to extend the warranty on its Torqx M28 SSD to 10 years. This is a rather unexpected move and a wide warranty time period.

They also updated all models by increasing the cache memory associated to the controller from 64 MB to 128 MB to claim higher performance level with SATA interface: 220 MB/s in reading and 200 MB/s in writing. This announcement comes as a new step in the emerging war between SSD manufacturers racing for the highest performance level, the race to the cheapest model should also appear in a near future. Well, let's hope.
