A Compact Flash Card Built Like a SSD

By linathael. Original by Lionel - 09/07/2009 06:00:00 CEST - Category: Hard Drive

In couple of months, performance levels of SSDs dramatically jumped, leaving disc-based HD in the dust, as well as other flash-memory based storage solutions. Transcend decided to apply some of its knowledge in SSD to the Compact Flash card market, with 2 new products offering amazing performance levels:

Transcend claims that those 600x cards offer 92 MB/S and 82 MB/s in reading and writing mode, respectively. this result was obtained by using a 4 channels controller (as for SSD). As for SSD, those CF cards can manage the wear-leveling technology aiming to optimize memory chips and increase their life time.
Of course, the price remains unknown, and for sure SanDisk, Lexar and other renowned CF manufacturers/distributors are probably thinking of moving in the same direction before losing market shares. Indeed, such cards from Transcend, if priced appropriately could simply become the new reference for photogs. Imagine a Nikon D3x, with such card you could really extend the number of photos taken on continuous mode...
