With its Pré, Palm decided to play on the edge by offering a "hack" making it possible to synchronize contains between the Pré and iTunes. To obtain such result, they have coded a hack that makes the Pré recognized as an iPod by iTunes, without being granted by Apple.
If Apple officially did not react, they have indirectly sent a warning as reported by John Gruber.
Apple is aware that some third-parties claim that their digital media players are able to sync with Apple software. However, Apple does not provide support for, or test for compatibility with, non-Apple digital media players and, because software changes over time, newer versions of Apple’s iTunes software may no longer provide syncing functionality with non-Apple digital media players.
In other words, this hack for allowing synchronization between the Pré and iTunes might not be functional anymore with the future iTunes update. Palm will always have the solution to update its hack. It will be interesting to follow this "compatibility topic" in the future to see if Apple is willing to fight against Palm Pré, or rather let it go.
