During couple of years, SanDisk has tried to compete with Apple on the digital mobile music player. One would remember the ads launched in 2006 by Sandisk treating iPod users as sheep. But this was about 3 years ago, and over the years, SanDisk while capturing the second position on this market, far behind Apple, never reached its goal to really compete with Apple.
SanDisk CEO, Eli Harari, officially threw in the towel, making clear that no one could do anything against the iPod, and the iPod is... the iPod. Of course, SanDisk gains experience and is now capitalizing on patents filed during this period and related to mobile music players. Those royalties are welcome today to help SanDisk to transit from its leading position on memory card market to the growing market of SSD in which SanDisk is not among the key players yet.
