RAID 5 volume in a 3.5" SSD

By linathael. Original by Lionel - 03/06/2009 06:00:00 CEST - Category: Hard Drive

The Japanese company Photofast, already known for SSD products built for exception and very high-end demand, announced a new stunning model.

In a 3.5" enclosure, they included 4 1.8" SSDs connected to each other by a RAID 5 controller. The main interest for end user is to be able to rely on the integrity of his data saved on such drive. of course, as it is based on a SATA II format, performance level will saturate to 300 MB/s max.
There is nevertheless an important question not answered yet. As it is a RAID 5 volume, will the end user be able to replace (easily) a potentially faulty 1.8" SSD? If not than such RAID volume information is most probably there as a marketing information rather than a functional parameter. Indeed. it might then be easier to purchase a RAID controller card and 4 identical 1.8" SSD and setup a RAID 5 volume. In case of failure one will simply need to replace the faulty SSD.
