ATI/AMD will release for Windows a new set of drivers which will include an API compatible with multiple OS and mostly aiming to speed up video decoding and windows resizing.
This is only one step further in the right direction but it might mostly be a reaction from ATI/AMD to avoid leaving NVidia too much play ground in this field. Unfortunately nothing seems to be ready for the Mac. This might due to the on-going work in which probably both companies are involved with Apple for optimizing video and display related developments for Snow Leopard. We are still curious to know which companies will capture the leading flag in the GPGPU war, especially that Snow Leopard will be the first OS to massively rely on this technology with its Grand Central and Open CL. As a sign that the competition between both GPU giants is only in progress, NVidia has started distributing Mac Edition cards independently of Apple Store channels, and we would not be surprised if ATI/AMD quickly follow up by strengthening its already existing distribution channels which have been existing but not really boosted for years.
At the end it might be easier for both manufacturers to release only PC graphic cards and offer firmware update for Mac users. It would make both their life and our life much easier. It would be possible to get the firmware update on a CD and just have to insert it in the MAc, reboot while pressing C, wait the procude takes place, and that's it. We can always dream...
