Additional Detail for Installing Radeon HD4870/90 PC in a Mac Pro

When we released the procedure to install a Radeon HD4870/90 PC in a Mac Pro without requiring to flash the BIOS, we thought that only skilled users will try it. It seems that many Mac users were waiting for this trick to be able to instal the current best graphic card in their Mac Pro. We have been contacted by many users so we decided to add additional details. You first need to bring additional power to the GPU via 6 pins connectors. You have 2 solutions:

  • the best way is to find 2 adaptors specific for Apple hardware. You will plug them directly on the motherboard next to the PCI Express slot. You can order them from any APR, or from some Mac resellers.
  • The second solution, is to get the power from the back of the SuperDrive thank to a molex extension connector that can be found in all computer shops, then to adapt two connectors provided with the Radeon PC card.

This operation is not too difficult, but it will require cutting/connecting/soldering some wires. several users did it successfully, and the PSU can deliver the power requested by both the GPU and the SuperDrive. Of course, the first solution is the cleanest and easiest, but also the most expensive one.

Last but not least, it is required to get a Radeon HD 4870/90 corresponding to the reference model from ATI/AMD website (GPU and RAM frequencies, amount of VRAM), as any other "improved" version might not be compatible with the drivers/extensions we released in our previous news.
