LDS, the joint venture of Philips and Lite-On intended for storage revealed its roadmap for the remainder of the year 2009.
In addition to many DVD engravers that will soon be released, they announced that they will launch during the fourth quarter of this year the first Blu-ray burners able to write a single-layer disk of 25 GB at 12x. At this speed (not yet supported by the standard), and for the price of quality media, the backups to Blu-ray could become an interesting solution, at least a rapid way to burn such volumes of data for storage.
Note that we are approaching the theoretical maximum speed that this format can promise. To burn at 12x, it is already necessary to spin the disk to nearly 10000 rpm. Currently, the engravers of DVD at 22x push the rotation speed to 12000 rpm, the equivalent of a Blu-ray at x14. Beyond this, it will certainly be necessary to reinforce the structure of the disks and to improve further their balancing to stop minor imperfections causing a dangerous disintegration of the disk.
