Hereafter is a report from Nicolas:
I own an iPhone EDGE, purchase couple of days after its official launch in France. Since yesterday evening, I noticed the lack of Wi-Fi access, not only at home, everywhere I go, and If a network appears, I can not get connected, even though I own all the rights and correct keys. After reseting my iPhone, deleting all data, etc... nothing changed, so I decided to have a look at Apple Discussion forum, and I discovered than it is unfortunately a well documented issue, affecting numerous users:
- 2.2.1 Last Resorts
- 2.2.1 Killed my wifi
- 2.2.1 iPhone 3G Wifi Problems
It seems that the last iPhone OS update has unlocked the Wi-Fi transfer speed. This "advantage" might lead to a negative effect on the chips controlling the wireless network access, overheating or even antenna problems... while reducing battery lifetime. A proof that the temperature of the device is also involved, if you cool down your iPhone in a freezer, you can get access to Wi-Fi network again. for couple of minutes or hours.
The problem affects not only EDGE iPhone, but also the last 3G models. Let's hope that Apple will quickly fix the problem with a future iPhone OS update.
