Proof that times are changing, even Microsoft, who does not manufacture a lot, announced its intention to reduce carbon emissions. It's goal is to lower them 30% from current levels by 2012. To achieve this results, the company will be reducing its server consumption, replacing travel with video conferencing, better insulation on its buildings, etc...
You can't help but welcome this initiative, and since we're talking about servers, we hope that Apple finds a way to optimise the size of it's software updates. If you keep in mind the fact that to transfer that huge amount of data requires a huge quantity of servers, routers, and mirrors... although the size of each individual piece of grain is small, multiplied by millions, each megabyte saved is enormous.
PS: Like many other manufacturers, they offer a "green" series Xserve, using less power hungry processors and memory and 2.5" hard drives equally as energy efficient.
