Problems between new portables and some memory cards

By crispin. Original by Lionel - 08/12/2008 23:26:06 CET - Category: Laptop - Source: http://www.jkontherun.com
With its new portables, Apple inaugurates in the Mac the arrived of the DDR3, which starts to be widely used. Contrary to its old habits, Apple provides on its machines a largely acceptable quantity of RAM, even on basic MacBook which has 2 GB. However, some wanted to increase this to 4 GB and had problems. It seems that not all DDR3 functions in these machines and can make them unstable. One does not speak here about " No name" memory but memory manufactured by Crucial or Mushkin, ie reputable manufacturers. It is probable that the problem comes from the NVidia chipset which is still not in widespread use in the PC world, Apple being the first users. One will certainly need an update of this chipset or that the manufacturers of memory understand this particular requirements so that all returns to a working state.
While waiting, if you must change the memory of your Unibody portable, make sure that you buy it in a Mac retailer who you will certify it as functional or else to change it or to to make a refund in case of incompatibility.

iTunes Store: Free Music, Video and no more DRMs!?

By linathael. Original by Lionel - 08/12/2008 21:57:03 CET - Category: iPod
According to the French website Electronlibre.info, the iTunes Store will launch from December 26th till January 6th a special campaign entitled “iTunes 12 Days”.
In a partnership with several news networks and retailers, Apple will offer during this period free music tracks and video to be downloaded.
This is most probably the best way to convince some users to download for the first time music and video from the iTunes Store. It remains unclear if this campaign will only be restricted to France, in order to better fight against local competitors, or if it will be extended to all EU or worldwide.
Last but not least, according to the last rumors and information, Apple might announce tomorrow that it will stop DRMs on music tracks and album for the entire iTunes Store catalog!

Toshiba to Temporary Close Down some Flash Memory Production Lines

By linathael. Original by Lionel - 08/12/2008 21:55:03 CET - Category: Peripheral
For the first time since 2001, a chips manufacturer, Toshiba, decided to temporary close down some of its production site. Facing the massive drop of customers request, two production units over nine will be closed from December 27th till January 4th. This decision has been taken following the over-production faced by those manufacturers due to the economic slow down. So, closing a production line is cheaper than producing products that will not be sold, without margins, or even will cost money due to long storage.
Other chips manufacturers seem to have officially or not slow down their production if not stopped some lines too.

Did Apple Change its Mind regarding the Leaky PM G5 Issue?

By linathael. Original by Lionel - 08/12/2008 21:51:33 CET - Category: G5
If we stopped posting news about the PM G5 affected by the leaky liquid cooling system issue, we keep receiving reports every couple of days. The sudden death of the PM G5 usually happened after some typical syndromes such as the increased of the noise originating from the cooling system (fans blowing full speed).
If Apple did not officially acknowledge the problem yet, and will most likely not do it anymore unlike a legal action of unfortunate users will push it to, it seems that the company changed its policy concerning the handling and interaction with owners of a dead PM G5.
According to several readers from xlr8yourmac , they could get their PM G5 repaired under a extended warranty policy, even though it is not officially announced
This is good news, as almost all parts of a PM G5 affected by the leaky liquid cooling system usually need to be changed, including PSU, motherboard and CPU. If you had or are facing such issue with your PM G5, you now know that you need to call Apple customers service in order to argue for an extended warranty for repairing this problem.
