In order to fight against the grey market of iPhones coming from the United States, Apple set up a process of activation at the place of sale. This takes a lot of time and even turned into a debacle on the day when the 3G iPhone was launched, thus this has reached the limit.
According to Appleinsider, Apple could soon start selling unactivated iPhones at its sales outlets. They would be sold naked -as the french say - this means without a contract and at certainly a higher price, matching what happens in certain European countries. We do not know if they will remain related to an exclusive operator (very probable) or be désimlocked (unlikely).
To finish, always according to Appleinsider, Apple could remove from its catalogue the 8 GB model that does not have much appeal, and perhaps instead add a 32 GB model.
UPDATE:
Appleinsider has published an updated article that implies that the sale of unactivated iPhones may be limited to those that already have an AT&T account... so that even though the sale of naked iPhones may happen in the future - the future is not so imminent. Additionally the 8 GB iPhone is selling well and may not be dropped - and the 32 GB iPhone may not arrive until the New Year.
