USB 3.0: Intel Slow in Releasing Specifications?

by linathael . Original by Lionel - 11/06/2008 08:42:38 CEST - Source: CNet
Following a negative judgment for Intel under the claim of abusing of its monopoly position in Korea, a similar legal action is in progress in Europe and the European Commission should provide its decision in a near future.
In such context, AMD and NVidia have officially complained about Intel which has not yet released the complete USB 3.0 specifications to third-parties. They claim that Intel is international delaying such release to be ready to offer USB 3.0 controllers on its motherboards months before AMD and NVidia, while giving to other integrators no other way than shopping from Intel. Of course, the Californian founder claims it is still working hard on the USB 3.0, and the expected package will be released as soon as all information are finalized and available.
AMD and NVidia have decided not to wait any further and to launch their own USB 3.0 specifications, as an open project to other companies in order to marginalize Intel. Such a fight between giants demonstrates the interest and potential and USB 3.0 as major marketing parameters for future products, and it seems that no ones want to miss this train. For sure, such story might not help Intel's defense in the on-going legal action driven by the EC; especially considering that USB 3.0 is a universal port, not a proprietary one.
