Orange has not officially communicated on the new iPhone, apart from the delayed date of availability, July 17, however certain information
have now been acquired . Orange does not envision, all at least for the moment, to evolve their subscription rates; they will remain unchanged.
We do not know up to what level the iPhone will be subsidized, however it will be probably like the UK proportional to the value of the subscription, with perhaps the iPhone offered for high-end.
Since they still have models of the present generation, Orange should quickly lower their tariffs in order to exhaust their stocks as soon as possible.
It remains to be seen what really will be the position of Orange with respect to the iPhone. Looking closely at what they have done since they acquired the exclusivity: they have never made a big effort to develop the sales of the iPhone; the iPhone had even disappeared from the windows of their boutiques after a short time.
We even have had the impression that Orange had sought to obtain the exclusivity to block the competition from profiting from it rather than to sell the iPhone itself. It is probable that from now on they will not have to give Apple 30% of their revenue, so maybe things will change. But even this is not certain.
Even if with each iPhone sold they gained a subscriber, however they lose other proposed services which bring in money, such as the television offers on mobiles or the recent unlimited offer of downloading of music compatible only with the DRM from Microsoft and thus not with the iPhone.
Admittedly the sales d' iPhone has the chance to explode in France, Orange asserted today that nearly 150.000 have been sold and is aiming at the half million by the end of the year. But if they do not make any effort, they risk to have lower sales than in other countries where operators are more motivated and/or in competition.
