Some details on the next Radeon cards

The next generation of Radeon will be announced at the end of the month, however some information continues to filter out. The Radeon 4870, the high-end, should reach 1200 Gigaflops thanks to its 800 units of data processing.
Running at 750 MHz, it will require in addition power than given by the two connectors of PCI Express bus (there are only two of them on Mac Pro) with a forecast of a peak consumption higher than 225W (the PCI Express port delivers 150W and each additional connector 75W).
Beyond the video performances, the only reason to count the gigaflops is that just like NVidia, AMD hopes to accelerate computers by transforming its cards into coprocessors; or even, like the dream of NVidia, where the video card is the principal calculating unit leaving the main CPU only to do less noble tasks.
