The Unlimited Music Trend

by cliveatfive . Original by Lionel - 26/03/2008 15:36:01 CET
Unlimited music seems very popular if we are to believe certain rumors.
Sony BMG is studying the possibility of offering a subscription plan for complete access to its full music catalogue. It's presumed that this service would be open to iPod owners in order to reach a greater market, and consequently reach greater success.
This rumor comes at heels of another one dropped last week:
Apple is currently negotiating with the major record labels to offer unlimited access to music via the iTunes Music Store for all iPod owners. This feature would be offered in exchange for a cut of Apple's profits on each iPod sold for as long as the iPod was sold. Of course, the negotiations would be tightened to fix the price of this fee, which would undoubtedly be passed on to the price of the PMP.
This rumour would seem to be potentially deadly for online store eMusic, number two in several categories (behind the iTMS). The leaders of this site are afraid that such an agreement might put them under. It must be said that they would have no way to combat this type of partnership.
It remains exciting to watch whether Apple will succeed in imposing a worldwide global license and in France whether they will break any legitimacy to the fee on private copying levied on iPods.
