- Favicon on the iPhone - Ewok - 22:46:09

The favicon is a small image, and shows up next to the website-url in the addressbar of your browser:

It is commonly used as a small logo for websites. Since iPhone v1.1.3, it's possible to add WebClips to the SpringBoard. These are shortcuts to a website, and use the website's favicon as icon for the WebClip. Apple has made it possible for webmasters to set a special favicon for the iPhone, and here's how:

First method:
- Create a 57x57 PNG-image
- Call it apple-touch-icon.png
- Put it in the rootfolder of your website

Second method
- Create a 57x57 image, either PNG, GIF or JPG
- Upload it to your server
- In the header of your webpage, (between the and tags), put the following:

- DVD's with iTunes copy included - Lionel - 12:29:25

AppleTvSource managed to get one of the first DVD releases containing a special iTunes version of the movie, Family Guy.
In the case, they found 2 discs: one regular DVD-disc, and a second DVD containing the iTunes-movie and a Windows version (DRM'ed).

On a Mac, inserting the disc and double clicking the icon will launch iTunes. The serial number from the case will be returned before iTunes copies the contents to its library. Note that iTunes mistakingly uses the word 'download' instead of copy, which has already mislead some people.
It appears that iTunes sets a stamp on the movie, with some account-information, but this has yet to be verified.
The video quality is close to DVD-quality, and it's possible to transfer the movie to an iPod, iPhone or AppleTV.
This concept has just been launched in the US, but it's not clear yet whether/when it will come to Europe.

- 802.11n @ 450 Mbits/s - Lionel - 11:09:25

Source : http://www.electronista.com

While the 802.11n standard isn't finished yet, Marvell announces a new product with 50% better performance. To achieve this speed, the unit has 6 antennas: 3 for broadcasting the network, and 3 for receiving packets. Regular 802.11n products have only 3 antennas, used for both functions.
Marvell states that their products also have a 60% wider range, next to the 50% higher throughput (450 Mbit/s vs. 300 Mbit/s).
Their new products can still be used with other 802.11n-equipment, and they should be available this spring.
Terminals and computers will require the right equipment, if they want to use these higher speeds and range.

- Details about the MacBook Air - Lionel - 09:22:36

Our friends from MacQuebec.com published an interesting article about the MacBook Air, including numerous photos and interesting details. One can learn that the MacBook Air features a Mac OS X 10.5.1 build 9B2324, but some details could suggest it is a renamed and made up 10.5.2. The system seems to support MacBook Air specific function such as wireless Airport booting.

- Towards a Partnership between Swatch and Apple? - Lionel - 09:22:14

One of our reader reported that Apple engineers recently visited Swatch in Switzerland. Some might have thought it was related to internet timing invented by Swatch. Yves found additional information which could provide more details about a potential collaboration between both companies.

On the French-speaking Swiss TV channel Télévision Suisse Romande, when commenting Swatch financial results, N. Hayek was suggesting adding computer-related contents in future watch models. So, is it the first sign of an Pod-Swatch, providing music and more... able to connect to a remote server via wireless function (to be defined)?
More information fromhttp://www.tsr.ch/tsr

If one consider the size of the printed circuit in an iPod Shuffle, it would not be a huge design problem to make it moving into a watch; and the Groupe Swatch might be the best partner for such project as it offers entry level as well as luxurious models in its catalog. Another option could be linked the car market, as Apple seems interested, and Swatch has been involved with Mercedes in developing the Smart.

- GeForce 9600 GT: Not Released Yet, but Everywhere on the Web... - Lionel - 09:21:29

Source : Dailytech

While NVidia did not officially announced it yet;, the website PCOnline could put its hands on a GeForce 9600 GT sample, the future entry level graphic card from NVidia.
If this card feature less shaders than the GF 8800 GT (64 vs. 112), and narrower 64-bits memory bus vs. 128-bits, the frequency of its GPU is clocked higher and performance wise it partially compensate. Of course, the entry level GF 9600 GT will not overcome the GF 8800 GT, but this is for sure the best price/performance ratio for around 150€. This card could have replaced (advantageously) the Radon HD2600.

- Installing a Penryn in an iMac Alu... Side Effect - Lionel - 09:21:06

Hexus decided to disassemble an iMac Alu to replace the original Core 2 Duo Merom by the new high-end Penryn X7900 clocked at 2.8GHz.

If the installation was not an issue, the surprise came later on when checking the CPU and its performance: the FSB as well as the CPU are down clocked at 400MHz!
This is surprising if one considers that it was possible to upgrade iMac Core Duo with Core 2 Duo set on a FSB 667MHz without any problem. However, it is also possible that the CPU is not recognized (yet) by the motherboard, and consequently it boots in secure mode to avoid any over heating or high tension issue. With some luck, everything will be fixed when Mac OS X 10.5.2 will be released. Otherwise one will have to wish a hypothetical EFI update to make this CPU upgrade fully functional.
