Hitachi Unveils Low Power Consumption 3.5" HDs

The Energy Star label added to most of consumer electronics devices indicates that such devices follow regulations for low power consumption, especially in sleep mode.
In order to follow specifications defined in the Energy Star Fourth Edition, Hitachi announced series of power-friendly 3.5" HDs: DeskStar P7K500. Storage space of those HDs will range from 250 to 500 GB and power consumption will range from 3.6 W in idle mode and 6.4 W in working mode for the 250GB model, while HDs with a larger capacity (320, 400 and 500 GB) will drain 4.8 W and 8.2 W in idle and spinning mode, respectively.
To achieve such performance, Hitachi has been using technologies developed for 2.5" notebook HDs. With such HD series, Hitachi introduced greener HDs, and we can maybe expect in a near future to have power consumption information for each computer model, similarly to the energy label already stick to our fridges, washing machines and more recently to cars.
