Seagate Starts Shipping its First Hybrid HD

by linathael. - 09/10/2007 09:27:09 CEST - Source: TGdaily
Seagate announced to have started mass production of its first hybrid HD, a device combining a standard HD coupled to NAND flash. Known as Momentus 5400 PSD, Seagate’s hybrid HD will be available in several versions: 80 GB, 120 GB and 160 GB, and all drives will include the same 256 MB of flash memory and feature 5400-rpm rotation speed. According to Seagate, such a small amount of NAND is enough to boost booting time by 20%, reduce power consumption by 50% and improve reliability index in MTBF by 50%.
Interestingly, Seagate targets the mainstream market with this product, and not high-end HD for notebook, with a premium cost making the HD only 25% more expensive than the same model without NAND memory.
We would be interested in testing such drive to evaluate they behave in MacBooks; let's hope Seagate send us a sample.
