Sony will soon start to produce PS3 based on a 65nm version of the IBM-made Cell processor. The thinner manufacturing process will allow the console to run cooler, but mostly to lower the manufacturing cost, a vital issue for Sony.
...because Sony admitted during its last financial result that the console doesn't sell as well as planned, and the price of the PS3 will have to be lowered, even if the manufacturer is already loosing money over it.
We are probably reaching a ceiling in terms of game console pricing. Each new console costs much more than the previous one, and the success of previous generations let console makers wrongly imagine there were no limit to their prices. Visibly, along the way they forgot that their clients' wallet isn't resizable at will. And the PS3 was way too expensive. Whether its price is justified or not doesn't change the bottom line when you reach the cash register.
