After Dell's recall for 4.1 millions batteries, followed by Apple's ones accounting for 1.8 millions units, Sony estimates that the financial cost will be around US$138 to 206 million. The overall cost of those recalls will be even higher since it does not include shipments, but insurances will cover those costs.
As we mentioned it in our first report related to this problem, the Sony's image will be strangely affected by those recalls, and this could have a much higher cost, eventhough it might not translate immediately into US$ millions.
Another question remains: Why Sony did not recall batteries for its notebooks models (such as Vaio)? Does Sony use higher quality batteries in its notebooks (such batteries are usually manufactured in Canada, US or Europe)?
