Microsoft has officially announced the abandonment of Virtual PC for the Mac. Three and a half years after purchasing the software from Connetix, Microsoft feels that it will require too great an effort to port the complex software to the Intel platform. Undoubtedly, the competition from other virtualisation software is a dissuasion.
First, Parallels, which we have already spoken of, indicate that their development team is interested in supporting 3D acceleration. In addition, the latest beta version of their software has many improvements, such as better USB support (including USB2) and quicker loading of the virtual machines.
Finally, The developers of VMWare announced during WWDC that they would be releasing their famous software on our platform. The application is close to being finished and is being demoed in San Fransisco. The company announced that VMWare will make it possible to run Windows, Linux, Solaris, NetWare, etc. on Mac OS X, and will notify you by email when the software is available.
