Surcouf, an ''Apple Store'' look-alike

By Kalomir. Original by Lionel - 13/07/2006 10:33:25 CEST - Category: Apple
Thanks to Dominic for sending us these pics of the new Apple stand in the Surcouf [French computer shop] in Bordeaux.

This corner shows the typical design of the Apple Stores, as well as the, until recently named, Apple Centers.
The whole Apple line is there from the MacBook to the Quad. There are also iPods and their accessories.
This design, that's so different from the rest of the shop, might attract many curious people. Why is that Apple doesn't do that in every other shop?

Video on small displays: not a hit

By Kalomir. Original by Lionel - 13/07/2006 10:29:22 CEST - Category: Apple - Source: TGdaily
Knowledge Networks made a survey of the public for demand for video on mobile phones and iPods. According to the results, it hasn't reached the expected success...
- only 50% of subscribers to video on their mobile phones actually use this service, though they pay for it.
- 30% of "video" iPod owners use this functionality.
Such results might disappoint those who sell such devices as well as those who distribute content. It's not that surprising given how uncomfortable it is to watch a long video on such a small screen.
Sony also experienced this with their PSP, though its screen comfort is beyond comparison with that of an iPod. This didn't prevent the video UMD market to settle very quickly at a very low level.
We'd be eager to know whether French 3G phone services companies that offered to watch live (or almost) goals of the FIFA soccer World Cup met the success they'd expected...

50 TB on a 4.5

By Greg. Original by Lionel - 13/07/2006 08:45:27 CEST - Category: CD Drives - Source: CDR Info
Scientists from the Harvard Medical School claim to have synthesised a protein able to store information and allow its access. A variant of a real protein found in bacteria, its property is to switch predictably from one state to another when exposed to light. The colour of the protein indicates its current state.
Little information has been given so far concerning data storage and reading. What we know is that this technology makes it possible to store from 500GB to 50TB of data on a 12 cm disk (4.72").
Now what we need to know is this protein's behaviour in the long term and its resistance to light and heat.
For the moment, we'll just say that this could be interesting if it is further developed. Wait and see...
