Microsoft Office 2007 was expected to allow PDF export and had been advertised as such. But Adobe did not see it like that and firmly opposed the implementation of its proprietary format in Microsoft suite unless it is optional and charged an extra fee.
Unable to reach an agreement, Microsoft simply gave up.
While Adobe justified its stand through its purposed will not to favor Microsoft's monopoly, this was indeed probably but a step in the format battle to come between PDF and its Microsoft competitor XPF.
